Sweet speech and good behaviour is a great virtue

GOD HAS bestowed us a virtue of voice, but if we add sweetness and smile with what we tell others, it has no comparison. In Indian scriptures, it is said that with the sweetness of speech one can immediately make the other person his/her friend and if the voice is bitter, the other person immediately becomes an enemy. Once, some teachers went to Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry. One of the teachers asked the The Mother, Mirra Alfassa: What should be done to be happy all the time? She replied: Always spread sweetness through your voice; show affection to everyone; once you do this, happiness will come to you automatically. Then she narrated a story: There was a woman in Persia. She used to sell honey, and her voice was also sweet like honey. Sellers used to throng at her shop to buy honey. One day, an ill-natured man saw her selling honey and was amazed to know how can a woman sell so much of honey? He felt jealous, and then opened a shop next to her, and started selling honey too. But he was a very harsh man, and his voice was extremely bitter. One day a customer asked him, How you are sure that the honey you are selling is not adulterated? He responded with anger, and the buyer left his shop. The same customer then went to the womans shop and asked her the same question. The woman answered him smilingly and said that when she herself is honest, then how the honey she sells can be adulterated? The customer also smiled and bought the honey. After relating this story, The Mother said in her preaching: Humble nature and sweet voice always help to achieve success, no matter what you are doing. Hence, one must always speak softly and humbly.

There is another example of this:Once when I was the president of one of the Rotary Clubs in Allahabad, we had organised a survey to make some shopkeepers realise the effect of humble and sweet language. We had chosen about 15 worst shopkeepers in a given area of the c! ity who never behaved nicely with their customers. It was in fact, linked with buyers and sellers relations in the area of community service. All these worst shopkeepers were then asked many questions, essentially in an indirect way, about the behaviour with their customers. And finally we selected the best seller amongst the 15 worst sellers. He was then awarded a prize, and he was really proud to receive it. You will be surprised to know that this particular seller is now one of the best sellers in that area.
